The Assistant Chief Engineer will be assisting the Director of Engineering in ensuring the efficient operation of the hotel property and all its equipment, ancillary maintenance, repair services and protection of the Owner’s asset. Structural aspects of the hotel as well as the maintenance of grounds and external facilities all fall within the span of responsibility.


Your day-to-day

Financial Returns:

•    Ensure the effective financial management of the maintenance department by setting maintenance budgets, capital works program’s and engineering plans and ensuring that performance against there are regularly monitored and reviewed.  Responsible for the general cost control aspects of maintenance, the preparation of departmental cost budgets and their implementation and submission to management.

•    Assist in control of Capital Projects, in liaison with management, to ensure capital funding is effectively allocated and budgeted in accordance with company directives and philosophy.

•    Contribute to the hotel’s profitability by ensuring the effective management of the buildings environmental controls and energy conservation systems.  Evaluate, control and record energy usage and implement and upgrade energy conservation systems.


People:

•    Provide advice to senior management on all aspects of maintenance support, environmental controls and the operational efficiency of the property.

•    Ensure the staff awareness of energy management within the property by conducting regular education and training programs on energy conservation and matters related to efficient operation of equipment in a cost-effective fashion.

•    Ensure a technically competent maintenance staff by selecting, training and developing a motivated, well-qualified maintenance team. Carry out regular work sampling studies within the department and evaluate the performance and productivity of personnel.


Guest Experience:

•      Contribute to guest satisfaction standards by ensuring that technical support services quickly address, and where possible, anticipate, individual needs.  Ensure the safety and comfort of guests and that any requests for service are handled in a courteous and efficient fashion.


Responsible Business:

•    Plan, implement and administer an energy management program by establishing energy reduction objectives, the maintenance of records and regular reporting of performance against these objectives.

•    Ensure adherence to all statutory regulations and fire codes by regularly reviewing policies and safety procedures.  Ensure that any tests and inspections required on plant by statutory authorities are carried out as and when required and that all records and documentation associated with such tests and surveys are correctly kept and/or displayed.  Ensure that the hotel fulfills all compliance requirements.

•    Maintain the condition of the physical assets of the hotel by carrying out any upgrading and project work in liaison with architects, interior designers and management.

•    Ensure the effective operation of all the mechanical and electrical systems and equipment by implementing and managing a preventative maintenance program.  Closely monitor the condition of the physical property and equipment by conducting continual inspections of the building. Ensure that preventative maintenance schedules are in operation and regularly upgraded.

•    Contribute to a high standard of quality control within the hotel by actively participating in the hotel’s Quality Assurance Program.

•    Ensure the cost effectiveness and technical efficiency of all services performed by outside contracts by close supervision.  Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with contracts, leases, services agreements and warranties.

•    Ensure the quality of all work completed by both employees and external contracted staff adheres to the standards of good engineering practice.

•    Be aware of duty of care and adhere to occupational, health and safety legislation, policies and procedures

•    Be familiar with property safety, first aid and fire and emergency procedures and operate equipment safely and sensibly

•    Initiate action to correct a hazardous situation and notify supervisors of potential dangers

•    Log security incidents and accidents in accordance with hotel requirements


Requirements

•      Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent, plus 3 years of engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Audio Engineering

Your Day to Day

People

  • Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of engineers and technicians to ensure smooth operations of all hotel systems.

  • Provide guidance, training, and performance feedback to team members.

  • Conduct regular briefings, safety talks, and maintenance meetings.

  • Promote teamwork and collaboration between the Engineering department and other hotel divisions.

  • Support the Chief Engineer in fostering a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement.

Financial Returns

  • Monitor engineering costs and assist in maintaining department budgets.

  • Ensure efficient use of manpower, tools, and resources.

  • Support the procurement of materials and contractor services at cost-effective rates.

  • Contribute to energy conservation and cost-saving initiatives without compromising guest satisfaction.

Guest Experience

  • Ensure all mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and life-safety systems function efficiently to support guest comfort and safety.

  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests and guest issues.

  • Oversee preventive maintenance and minor repair works in guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house.

  • Assist in coordinating engineering support for hotel events and functions.

  • Maintain hotel facilities in line with IHG brand standards.

Responsible Business

  • Enforce safety procedures and ensure compliance with workplace and fire safety regulations.

  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and inspections.

  • Supervise contractors and vendors to ensure quality work and adherence to hotel policies.

  • Participate in sustainability initiatives such as energy and water conservation programs.

  • Support emergency and crisis response procedures when required.

Accountability

The Engineering Manager is accountable for supporting the Chief Engineer in ensuring the hotel’s building systems are well maintained, energy efficient, and compliant with safety standards. This includes supervising technicians, managing maintenance schedules, and providing operational leadership to achieve engineering excellence.

Requirements

  • Diploma or Certificate in Mechanical, Electrical, or Building Services Engineering (or related discipline).

  • Minimum 3–5 years of engineering or maintenance experience in hospitality or commercial buildings.

  • Good technical knowledge of M&E, HVAC, plumbing, and fire safety systems.

  • Prior supervisory experience in a facilities or hotel maintenance setting preferred.

  • Proactive, hands-on, and able to troubleshoot technical issues independently.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Willingness to work on-call, weekends, and public holidays as operationally required.

• Implement and maintain the work request program and preventive maintenance program to ensure it is complied, completed and accurate.

• Determine opportunities for improving productivity from associates in term of utilization, work methods and performance. To evaluate and analyse the need to make adjustment and modification to the operation as well as any related training.

• Ensure that operational features are performed in accordance with the design intent of the facility with strict regard for safety and energy conservation.

• Coordinate and communicate engineering work activities with other departments concerning identification of repair and maintenance problems and requirements, satisfaction with work in progress, and work completed.

• Develop work plan prior to the intended execution of work, considering all possible disruption that could cause to the guests and other operating departments, manpower and materials availability, in order to minimize adverse impact to the operation.

• Trouble shoot and make recommendation for remedial action for system deficiencies.

• Assist in maintaining inventory of all tools, materials and parts. To coordinate with purchasing department for sourcing of parts, materials and contract services locally.

• Monitor the implementation of energy conservation program and to prepare monthly utilities consumption reports. To ensure that monthly utilities invoices are collected on time and to analyse and highlight any discrepancy to the Chief engineer office with explanation.

• Ensure that all associates from the engineering fully understand the operation of the fire & life safety system and procedures.

• Conduct daily briefing to all associates and to highlight all major activities taking place for the day include banqueting events and its engineering support requirement。

• Check daily associates’ attendance records & personal grooming and to review daily work logs for incomplete works follow up. To check daily water treatment result and to coordinate with housekeeping for checking of VIP rooms and front office for guest rooms needed for Ken Fix It program.

• Initial proposed operating & capital expenditures budget pertaining to Engineering works / systems to Chief engineer for consideration.

• Maintain and update complete file of technical manuals, parts list, drawings, FF&E list for all equipment, plants etc.

• Prepare monthly report to the Chief Engineer regarding the operation status of all systems, preventive maintenance works completed and out standing works or backlog for the work request program, progress of Ken Fix It program, preventive maintenance works schedule to be carried out for next month.

• Conduct bimonthly inspection of the engineering work places, equipment and tools to ensure it is free of danger and hazard.

• Perform other duties as may be assigned by Chief engineer

• Supervise contractors as advised by his supervisor.
